Reading together is a wonderful way to build confidence and a love of books throughout the year. Level 1 books are often a great place to start, helping children practice familiar words and simple sentences.
Some children enjoy being given two choices while reading, such as, "Do you think this word says big or small?" Flashcards with a single word and matching picture can also be a fun way to reinforce sight words.
Decorating your home with word posters that match your child's interests—such as animals, dinosaurs, space, or favourite characters—can be a fun way to surround them with print. Some children enjoy searching for familiar words on the posters or pointing them out throughout the day.
Reading song lyrics together or singing karaoke is another creative way to practice reading skills while having fun. Many local libraries also offer Summer Reading Challenges, along with STEM kits, puzzles, games, and other hands-on learning resources that families can borrow and enjoy together.
Look for opportunities to count with your child throughout the day. Using a visual timer (such as the one on an iPhone) can also help them see the numbers counting down while developing number sense and time awareness. Teach them how to count up by 2, 5 and 10.
Middle School Grades 6–8
Math
Help your child build a strong foundation in math by practicing skip counting and multiplication facts regularly. Everyday activities—such as counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, or using money—make learning meaningful and fun. Coins and bills are also a great way to introduce fractions, as they help children understand parts of a whole, equivalent values, and real-world problem-solving.

Make reading part of your summer routine by joining a reading challenge! Encourage your child to reflect on what they've read through writing and meaningful conversations with family or friends, helping to build comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. Don't forget to visit your local library—not only can you discover great books, but many libraries also lend educational resources like STEM kits, electronic kits, circuit boards, puzzles, and other hands-on learning materials to spark curiosity and creativity.

Watch Your Signs: Positive and negative signs matter. Small sign mistakes can completely change an answer.
Take your time. Show your steps. Highlight important numbers in the question, write out helpful equations, and try to substitute in values.
Don’t panic if it doesn’t make sense immediately.
Learning math is all about practice and pattern recognition.
Think of Equations Like a Teeter-Totter or balance
When moving values across the equal sign, you must do the opposite operation on both sides to maintain the balance.
Whatever happens on one side must happen on the other.
Every math question follows the order of operations: BEDMAS
Brackets (start here and keep coming back until they’re all dealt with)
Exponents
Division
Multiplication
Addition

Organize Your Work
Try to keep:
Variables on one side
Numbers on the other side
Collecting Alike Terms
Variables stay the same because you’re combining similar terms.
Example: 3x + 2x + 3y = 5x +3y
Multiplying or Dividing Variables
Use power laws to determine how exponents change.
Example: x² × x³ = x⁵
